Scenic Stays: Enjoying the Beauty of Juneau from Your Hotel

01 April, 2024

While Juneau is well-known as a travel destination, you might be in the area for other purposes, such as work or an event. If you can’t make it out to explore the hiking trails or to experience the gold rush through an excursion, scenic stays will make a difference.

Learn how to enjoy the beauty of Juneau from your hotel by booking one of these hotels with scenic views.

Leading Juneau Hotels Putting You Close to Nature

If you’ve always wanted to visit Juneau but find yourself working from your hotel room or in town during terrible weather, you can still see its beauty from the indoors. Consider booking one of these hotels with a great view.

1. Frontier Suites

Although the hotel is located near the airport, it’s only 2 miles from Auke Lake and 4 miles from Mendenhall Glacier. Get outside the walls of your hotel and you’ll be immersed in the outdoor wonders Juneau has to offer.

Walk from the airport to Frontier Suites or enjoy the complimentary airport shuttle. Relax in the suite that is complete with a full kitchen to make your stay feel like home. Prep a cup of coffee or tea and watch nature from your hotel room.

2. Juneau Hotel

Located in downtown Juneau, you can see the harbor from the front side of the hotel or the mountains if your room faces the backside of the hotel. If you want a specific view, opt for booking your stay over the phone instead of online to ensure the hotel can accommodate your preference.

During your stay, you’ll be moments from the Visitors Bureau and close to many outstanding restaurants. Order delivery through popular apps to get a taste of local cuisine delivered to your hotel room if you can’t get out.

Here’s what one guest had to say about their stay at the hotel:

“There’s a great view of the Juneau whale statue and the nice boardwalk right outside the doors, that leads to downtown. You can get great views of the channel and sunsets. I truly enjoyed my time here.”

You’ll have no trouble getting excursion companies to pick you up at the hotel or you can opt to take the short walk to the cruise docks where excursions meet.

3. Silverbow Inn

Room views are not all that incredible but if you head up to the rooftop terrace, you’ll be wowed with views of the water and downtown. Staying in a downtown hotel will allow you to walk to major sightseeing locations and restaurants.

Just be sure to book early as the hotel only has 12 rooms, making it fairly exclusive. The environment is relaxed and cozy according to past guests who thoroughly enjoyed their stays.

4. Four Points by Sheraton

You’ll have a great view of the harbor from Four Points by Sheraton in Juneau. Or spend your days looking at the snow-covered mountains in the distance.

The downtown Juneau hotel is in a great location for people-watching and for being close to major attractions. With decent reviews on Google of 4 stars on 329 reviews, you can rest assured that this hotel is a good option in a great location.

5. Baranof Downtown

Depending on which side of the hotel your room faces, you might see downtown out your window or the stunning Juneau mountains. The backside of the hotel features mountain views. You’ll feel like you’re in the wilderness. In contrast, the front side of the hotel will showcase the hustle and bustle of downtown.

The hotel’s décor and architecture will take you back in time. For some travelers, that’s a welcomed experience. Others prefer a more modern experience. Because the hotel is older and has older architecture, you’ll need to be ready for smaller rooms. Some reviewers love the quaint, older feel while others find it frustrating and wish it was a more modern experience.

6. Best Western Grandma’s Feather Bed

You’ll enjoy more seclusion when staying at this hotel as it is in the valley. With that, you don’t get the same convenience of being downtown. Plus, with just 14 rooms, this hotel is more exclusive than others. Be sure you book well in advance of your trip if you plan to stay here.

With fewer rooms, you’ll also pay a higher per-night rate to stay at this hotel so balance what is most important to you when booking your hotel. It’s best to rent a car or have reliable transportation because you won’t be within walking distance of the majority of Juneau’s restaurants and attractions.

Customers do enjoy their stay at Best Western Grandma’s Feather Bed saying it is more of a bed and breakfast feel but with the hotel chain’s amenities.

How to Experience Juneau Indoors

When you book your travel to Juneau, you never know what the weather will be like. As you plan your itinerary, leave room for days indoors in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. Here are some ideas for indoor fun and exploration during your travels.

1. Alaska State Museum

Scenic Stays

One perk of being in the state’s capital is that the state museum is located in the city. You’ll learn about how the area was founded, crucial details about its settling, how it grew during the gold rush days and more.

2. Juneau-Douglas City Museum

Another museum option is the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, which offers facts and information about Juneau’s local history. Review interesting exhibits and take in the local art while experiencing the city’s culture.

3. Last Chance Mining Museum

This museum was once the location of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company from 1912 to 1944. Today, it offers insights into what life was like during the mining days. You can see the equipment that miners used during that time and review artifacts from that era. Admission is an affordable $5 per person. While the museum is indoors, you’ll need to hike up a small hill to get to the museum so plan accordingly with wet weather apparel.

4. DIPAC’s Macaulay Salmon Hatchery

With 150 local marine species, you can take part in an Alaskan experience at DIPAC’s Macaulay Salmon Hatchery. You can witness the Pacific salmon’s life cycle from a birds-eye-view while exploring the hatchery. Enjoy wild Alaskan salmon products during your visit or ship them home for a taste of Alaska when you return.

Visit during operating hours from May through September or by appointment from October through April.

5. Alaskan Brewing Company

Tour the indoor facility to learn more about how the brews are made. You’ll get to see the bottling process. Enjoy food from the food truck parked on the property after your tour and sample some of the local brews. Review tour times and options on the brewery’s website, especially if you’ll be visiting during the off-season.
